A Mockumentary Web Series Following the Misadventures of a Team of Zookeepers

Producer / Writer / Bernard Friendly – Lead

Project Overview

Starting out as a student short-film assignment, this project evolved into a full-fledged web series. It follows the lives of three zookeepers at a local, struggling zoo. Produced as a mockumentary, the comedy is never-ending as the audience is unexpectedly thrown into the zany hijinks of a young, bright-eyed zookeeper, his jaded mentor, and his cynical nemesis as they are forced to team up over the summer in preparation for the ominous “field trip day.”

Personal Statement

I am very honored that this project exists. I was cast as the lead character when the series was only a short film assignment for some students. I had stated in passing to one of the Co-Directors, Shea Megale, that the short film’s storyline was a fitting prologue to an entire comedy series. To my surprise, I received a call about a month or so after the shoot had wrapped. The crew was on board to keep the project going and I was given a Producer credit.

How I Grew as a Part of This Project

This project went on for two years. I learned how to write storylines that were consistent across characters’ lives while taking into account the unexpected twists and turns of the actors’ actual lives. We had several crew shifts as well, but the foundation I learned to build and provide to newcomers only grew stronger with each evolution of our team. I’m proud to say this was a very foundational project for me, and I would love to pick it up again if only to continue growing in that way.

Enter the Zeitgeist

The process is simple.

You scream from the rooftops. I scream from the rooftops. You think it’s an echo, but then it keeps going. You realize it’s me responding to your initial rooftop scream. We find each other. We discuss the story you’re trying to tell at a much more reasonable volume. I research your audience and develop your story in a way that helps you connect with your target audience.

If you aren’t a fan of yelling across vast distances or it’s cold outside, we could try carrier pigeons or smoke signals, but emailing might be easier. Actually, yeah. Let’s just go with that.

Not sure you’re “story” material? That’s ridiculous. You’ve started a business or are helping it grow. There are more sane things to do with your time, trust me. Look at the other crazy people in history. Why do we remember them? Because they made a good story.
