Where the Brewmaster Begins

A Testimonial-Style Commercial to Support an Independent Business

Writer / Producer / Director / Editor / Principle – Employee

Project Overview

This video testimonial-inspired commercial was the first commercial Jay’s Brewing Supply ever produced. It follows the story of a young man interested in brewing his own beer. The purpose was to target younger audiences and provide an implicit call-to-action to visit the store.

Personal Statement

I had produced a handful of projects by the time this opportunity came around. It was the first time I was commissioned to produce a video for a business. As of the time of this writing, it remains one of my best portfolio pieces as well. I gained a new perspective on commercial shoots during this project. My team and I were able to use our experience in guerrilla filmmaking, marketing, branding, and good old fashioned DIY cinema to make this ad spot happen.

How I Grew as a Part of This Project

I had severe impostor syndrome while preparing for this shoot and the actual day of production. As I recall, my insecurities and uncertainties in myself led to the need for some reshoots. That said, my cast, crew, and client were very supportive and helped me maintain my footing even though I had not yet gotten my sea legs for the voyage that was this production. Today, I am confident in my abilities to handle almost any situation that may arise during filming.

Enter the Zeitgeist

The process is simple.

You scream from the rooftops. I scream from the rooftops. You think it’s an echo, but then it keeps going. You realize it’s me responding to your initial rooftop scream. We find each other. We discuss the story you’re trying to tell at a much more reasonable volume. I research your audience and develop your story in a way that helps you connect with your target audience.

If you aren’t a fan of yelling across vast distances or it’s cold outside, we could try carrier pigeons or smoke signals, but emailing might be easier. Actually, yeah. Let’s just go with that.

Not sure you’re “story” material? That’s ridiculous. You’ve started a business or are helping it grow. There are more sane things to do with your time, trust me. Look at the other crazy people in history. Why do we remember them? Because they made a good story.
